Merchandise exports contract in April
Merchandise exports dived 55.6% year-on-year in April (March: -10.0% year-on-year). The outturn marked the largest decline since February 2022. Meanwhile, merchandise imports plunged 22.7% over the same month last year in April (March: -17.8% yoy), marking the weakest result since February 2022.
As a result, the merchandise trade balance deteriorated from the previous month, recording a USD 2.1 billion deficit in April (March 2023: USD 0.9 billion deficit; April 2022: USD 0.4 billion deficit). Lastly, the trend deteriorated, with the 12-month trailing merchandise trade balance recording a USD 15.7 billion deficit in April, compared to the USD 14.0 billion deficit in March.
